Sinomach-built duty-free complex, world's largest, opens in Hainan

2022-12-30The Haikou International Duty-Free City Shopping Complex, the world's largest stand-alone duty-free facility, opened on Oct 28. The project was jointly built by Sinomach and internationally renowned design companies including Malherbe Paris and TDS.
Located near the key transportation hub of Haikou along the northern coast of the island province of Hainan, the shopping mecca covers an area of 280,000 square meters and features more than 800 notable brands, including five global firsts and more than 50 stores with the world's latest concept designs.

The shopping complex will provide new and diverse tourism and shopping experiences, and is expected to attract a return of overseas shoppers and contribute to building Hainan into an international tourism consumption center.
It is one zone of the Haikou International Duty- Free City project, which comprises about 930,000 sq m. The project has six plots dedicated to duty-free businesses, high-end offices and hotels as well as talent communities.
Sinomach subsidiary China IPPR International Engineering Co Ltd (IPPR) participated in the design of nearly 30 integrated stores, cross-border e-commerce zones, VIP visitor centers and whisky museums. IPPR also introduced innovative ways to interact with customers such as a cosmetic testing system, individualized shopping solutions, and a perfume and cosmetics lecture room.

The sprawling complex brings local cultural forces to the fore. The facility's architectural shape is based on the begonia flower and incorporates elements such as Haikou's natural characteristics and marine culture.
As a new representative work of Sinomach, the project has become a landmark building of the city and a must-visit place.
"This is another signature event in the construction of Hainan free trade port," said Feng Fei, governor of Hainan province. "Offshore duty-free shopping has become one of the great name-cards of Hainan's tourism sector."
